Johannesburg - Six people died when a car collided head-on with a bakkie in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said on Wednesday.

He said the car was trying to overtake another car when it crashed into the bakkie on Tuesday.

Five people in the car and one in the bakkie died on the scene.

One passenger in the car was taken to hospital.

Mchunu expressed shock at the accident.

"It is traumatic to learn that six people have died in such a horrific accident," he said in a statement.

"I have tasked a team from the law enforcement unit to investigate thoroughly what happened leading to this accident.

"Our view is that even this accident could have been avoided, but through negligence of one driver, six lives have been lost."

Mchunu sent condolences to the families of the people who died.
