Durban - Six people were treated for smoke inhalation at a popular hotel on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast after a fire broke out in one of the rooms, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that of the six people treated for smoke inhalation at the landmark St Michael Sands resort, three were taken to hospital.

None was in a serious condition.

The hotel’s operations manager Rakesh Harripersadh said the fire broke out at about 06:30.

“There were two ladies in the room, which was severely gutted. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.”

He said it was believed that the fire broke out in the bathroom adjoining the room where the two women stayed, but that further comment on the cause could not be made until a formal forensic investigation had been completed.

He said two other rooms had also been affected by the severe smoke that had billowed out from the fire.

The hotel remained open for business, he said.
