Sizzler's killings: 2 in court

2003-02-17 08:15

Cape Town - Two men arrested on Thursday in connection with the Sizzlers massacre in January are due to appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court on Monday.

Nine men were found shot dead at the massage parlour on January 20. Most of them also had their throats slit.

The first man arrested was a 42-year-old male at a house in Mitchell's Plain at 05:00.

The second man, a 26-year-old who worked as a waiter at a well-known establishment at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, was arrested at his place of work at 08.15.

The arrests followed the release of identikits of the massacre suspects by a top police investigation team earlier this month.

Police spokesperson Captain Etienne Terblanche appealed to the media not to photograph or film the men at court because they still had to stand a number of identity parades.

Publishing or broadcasting their images could weaken the State's case, he added.

Both of the men arrested have confessed to their roles in the killings.

A 10th victim, who stumbled out to a nearby garage shortly after the murders to raise the alarm, was treated at Groote Schuur Hospital. The man known only as Quinton and in his 20s had been discharged from the hospital.

He had two bullets removed from his head. He is presently being held in a safe house at an undisclosed destination in the Western Cape.

On Sunday police, assisted by about 120 naval trainees, searched a 9km stretch of the N1 freeway outside Worcester in the Boland for the firearms used in the attack.

"We have not found anything at this stage. The area is very bushy."

Terblanche said a cellphone had been found, but it was not clear whether it related to the Sizzlers case. Forensic experts would be examining the device later.

melania.nel says... I would love for them to implement the youth subsidy into agriculture and other useful trades NOW. Farming is a mix between skill and passion. The people will know if they can do it or not when they have learnerships in the field. It won't help pushing them into the deep end. The gov should start buying available farms and smallholdings currently for sale and they should stop wasting time with talks and silly arguments. I pray for this country and I pray for future leaders with brains. Read the article...
