Snow closes border posts

2012-08-07 17:16

Johannesburg - Heavy snowfalls have caused the closure of several border posts between South Africa and Lesotho, the National Border Operational Committee said on Tuesday.

These borders are in the Free State and the Eastern Cape, said spokesperson William Mpye.

"The Qacha's Nek and Caledonspoort border posts were closed. Both posts will remain closed until further notice," he said.

The situation at the Monantsha Pass post was classified as dangerous and travellers were advised not to try and use the crossing.

Mpye said the Telle Bridge, Ongeluksnek and Ramatsiliso posts remained open, but were inaccessible to heavy vehicles.

@mukosit: Plz explain the comment/qualify. @andre.vandeventer.16: Swiss and European border posts are most likely found on decent, properly bituminised surfaces that do not pose extreme challenges without there being snow...least to say when it is snowing. Not every body has the required vehicle or skill to traverse such conditions, and before you respond, see how ppl who are qualified make mistakes and it will make you understand. Do not believe that a vehicle driven on snow or dirt is under control...just ask ppl in the world of rally business and they'll tell you (the ones who are honest!) that those cars are for a big part NOT under control, but being brought under control and manouvred as best possible.
