Cape Town – Al Jazeera has denied that American information technology expert Edward Snowden played any part in leaking the now infamous Spy Cables, according to reports.

According to Eyewitness News the news agency who is in possession of leaked documents from State Security Agency (SSA) operatives showing how South Africa became vulnerable to foreign espionage after the end of apartheid, said on Tuesday that reports that the cables emanated from Snowden was incorrect.

The cables, obtained by Al Jazeera, span a period from 2006 to the end of 2014, and include detailed briefings and analyses written by the operatives.

Al Jazeera started releasing the documents to the world on Monday evening.

Al Jazeera’s Clayton Swisher told EWN that unlike Snowden’s leak, which dealt with signal intelligence, these cables, operational in their nature, deal with human intelligence or humans.

He said there are unrelated to Snowden and thought they very much complement the transparency that’s been on Al Jazeera's side to release them.
