Johannesburg - A fourth player from Eleven Stars football club has died at a local hospital following a car accident at the R346 road in the Eastern Cape, the club says.
Club president Siyabulela Makunga said on Tuesday that Kwakhanya "Makhwenkwe" Ngxingolo, 21, died in East London after spending three months in the intensive care unit.
"His untimely passing has left his family, the club and the entire Kubusi community in shock and sadness," he said.
Makhwenkwe was admitted to hospital on 1 September, after being critically injured in a car crash in which 10 people died.
His teammates, Awethu Dyantyi, Siviwe Green and Abulele Bomela were among those who died.
The club, which is based in Kabusi village, had been on its way back from a soccer tournament in Ndakana village in the Eastern Cape at the time of the crash.
"After fighting a battle for his life, I’ve seen my son recovering and was hoping that he will spend Christmas with us, only to wake up to saddening news that he was no more," said Makhwenkwe’s mother Luleka Ngxingolo.
She remembered her son as a brave young man and a fighter.
Makhwenkwe will be buried at his home in Kubusi village in Stutterheim on Saturday.
