Johannesburg - Some infantry soldiers have not been paid their salaries for the month of December, the SA National Defence Force said on Saturday.

"The matter has been brought to the chief of the SANDF [Solly Shoke] that the members have not received their salary and the chief has taken exception," said spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini.

"He is very angry with that situation."

Dlamini said Shoke was launching an investigation into the non-payment of salaries for some of the members of the 2nd South African Infantry Battalion, and wanted to know whether this action was intentional or "sheer negligence".

"Why would everyone be paid and not these people be paid?" asked Dlamini.

Bonus bungle

Earlier this week, it was reported that a changeover to a new human resources system led to a bungle in bonuses paid to about 200 SA Air Force members this month

"We moved from one system to another and that's when this happened... They were paid, but also received bonuses which were not due to them," Dlamini said at the time.

On Thursday, it was reported that the air force members were mistakenly given performance bonuses in December. They had to return the money.

According to Beeld newspaper, most of the soldiers concerned were already on holiday and would only see the letter informing them of the error when they returned to work in January.

Dlamini said the employees would have to repay the money in the next round of salary payments.
