Johannesburg - The decomposing remains of a 49-year-old Rustenburg man were found wrapped in a blanket and squashed into a bath at his home, North West police said on Friday.

"It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed to death about three weeks ago," said Sergeant Kealeboga Molale.

The man's 20-year-old son was arrested on Thursday.

Molale said the gruesome discovery was made after neighbours smelled a foul stench coming from the house and contacted the 49-year-old man's relatives. He was last seen alive on 6 June.

"The police were alerted and they conducted a search at the house with relatives...," she said.

The motive for the murder was not yet known.

The man was expected to appear soon in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court.
