Bloemfontein - A policeman has testified in court how a young man told him that he had murdered his mother and then went off to bars to get an alibi.

Volksblad
reported that Stefan Croucamp, 25, allegedly stabbed his mother Denise Seaward, 59, on 23 April 2010.

The following day he bought cleaning materials and petrol and after cleaning his mother’s room, he set her body on fire to destroy any evidence.

On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, robbery and arson, saying he had initially “confessed” about the murder because he had nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat and wanted to go to prison.

But the investigating officer said that Croucamp last year had said he wanted to talk about how he murdered his mother and then gave details pertaining to the murder and his actions afterwards.

“He said this thing had been bothering him for some time and he wanted it to go away. The truth had to come out,” said Lieutenant Colonel Christo Naudé.

Croucamp allegedly took his mother’s bank card after the murder and withdrew money with it, going drinking.

The case continues.
