Johannesburg - A 25-year-old man was arrested for killing a man who had allegedly tried to rape his mother, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The deceased 38-year-old man had visited the mother on Saturday evening. The two were cousins, said spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The 38-year-old man was given dinner and slept in a spare room within the house."

"At around 03:00, the woman allegedly woke up to the man in her bedroom trying to rape her. She screamed and her 25-year-old son, who was outside, came rushing to the bedroom armed with a knife."

The son allegedly found the man trying to rape his mother, and stabbed the man on his upper body. He died instantly, said Manatha.

The woman's son was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

He is expected to appear before the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to face a murder charge.

"The identification of the deceased is still being withheld until his next-of-kin are informed about his death," Manatha said.
