Son saves dad after lawnmower accident

2012-03-23 11:09

Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after his ride-on mower fell over and the blade slashed open his leg.

Allan Barnard's life was probably saved by his quick-thinking son Justin, 19, said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

Barnard, 55, was mowing the lawn on Wednesday afternoon at his house in Hillcrest when his wife, Charmain, heard a scream.

It appeared Barnard was on an incline when the tractor mower fell over and the blade hit him, said Banks.

When Justin saw his father’s wound and how much blood was lost, he ran to fetch a belt from the house.

He tied it around his father’s leg to stop the bleeding.

Barnard had already lost a lot of blood by the time the paramedics arrived, said Banks.

He said the situation could have ended up being a tragedy had it not been for the belt tourniquet.

According to the Hillcrest Private Hospital, Barnard had an operation on Wednesday evening and surgeons managed to save his leg.

He was still in the high care unit on Thursday but his condition was stable.

Apart from the cut wound, the leg was also broken.

      Sam - 2012-03-23 13:15

I've had an english lesson or two... what's wrong with this? I know there are other ways of saying what happened, but I don't have a problem with this. You can cut open a watermelon, you can rip open a packet, you can slash open a leg. Where's the problem?

Well done young man, not many youngsters your age would have the presence of mind to think and act rationally and calmly in such emergencies. Your parents must be commended for raising such a strong-minded child.
