Soshanguve campus quiet

Pretoria - The Soshanguve campus of the Tshwane University of Technology was quiet on Friday following student disruptions earlier in the week, the university said.

The university closed the campus, north of Pretoria, on Thursday following student protests.

"The situation is quiet at the campus... management is busy with a troubleshooting chart to help students when they return," said spokesperson Gilbert Mokwatedi.

He said the chart would give students information on where to go when they needed help on various issues.

Mokwatedi said they would be checking whether the students had obeyed the call to vacate the premises.

"We allowed a smooth voluntary departure, we will assess the situation and see how to act."

He said law enforcement agencies had a copy of the court order and would act accordingly if the need arose.

The Tshwane University of Technology on Thursday obtained a court interdict against certain members of the Pan Africanist Movement of Azania.

The executive management committee closed the campus indefinitely, citing lawlessness, hooliganism, alcohol and drug abuse.

Hundreds of students were ordered to vacate the institution's premises and student representative council members were suspended, along with political activities on the campus.

A student was injured and hospitalised on Wednesday night during clashes between students affiliated to different political parties.

It was not yet known when the campus would re-open.
