Sowetan acting editor steps down

2011-08-03 19:39
Cape Town - The acting editor of the Sowetan newspaper, Len Maseko, stepped down from the position on Wednesday.

The newspaper is at the centre of a furore over a column by Eric Miyeni, in which City Press editor Ferial Haffajee was described as "a black snake in the grass, deployed by white capital to sow discord among blacks".

He added that "in the 80s she'd probably have had a burning tyre around her neck".

Miyeni has since been canned as columnist.

Maseko said as the column had been printed "on his watch", he accepted responsibility.

An investigation into why the column slipped through the cracks has been launched, with possible disciplinary steps being taken, the publisher of the Sowetan, Justice Malala, told News24 on Wednesday.

He told News24 that Mpumelelo Mkhabela had since been appointed editor of the newspaper.
