Johannesburg - The Sowetan's editor Bongani Keswa will "part ways" with Avusa Media, the company said on Sunday.

"Keswa has said he would like to take the time out to pursue other ventures," Avusa Media editor-in-chief Mondli Makhanya said in a statement.

The group's public editor Thabo Leshilo would continue to stand in as acting editor of the Sowetan, he said.

Leshilo is a former editor-in-chief of the Sowetan and Sunday World.

"The departure of Keswa from the media house was by amicable agreement and we would like to wish him well with his new ventures," Makhanya said.

Earlier this month, Avusa said that Keswa had been "placed on special leave".

Makhanya would not comment, other than to say it was "a matter between employer and employee".

The New Age, quoting unnamed sources, reported on Wednesday that the suspension was related to "dereliction of duty".

Leshilo submitted his resignation in January, indicating he would leave at the end of February. He said he would disclose at a later date where he was going.

It is always shocking how media houses respond when they have share their internal news with the world. No Comment or it a matter between the employee and the employer. What a nonsense.
