Johannesburg - A 47-year-old prophet and his wife have been arrested in connection with rape of a woman in Zondi, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said they were arrested on Tuesday, after a woman told the police she had consulted the prophet, and he had told her that she had to have sex with him if she was to be healed.

"The woman refused, but the prophet promised to give her muti to help her. He allegedly smeared her with a white powder that made her dizzy."

Makhubela said the prophet called his wife, 48, and ordered her to take the woman to a room and undress her.

He then allegedly raped the woman in the presence of his wife.

"They are in custody and are expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday," he said.

Makhubela said the prophet's wife was arrested for allegedly assisting her husband in committing the crime.
