Johannesburg - A Grade R pupil has died after being run over by a lawnmower at a Soweto primary school, the Gauteng education department said on Tuesday.

The five-year-old pupil was declared dead on arrival at hospital, spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.

"The head of department has immediately ordered an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including how the learner happened to be in the area where grass was being cut," Sekhonyane said.

The investigation would also look into whether any safety regulations or policies were breached. Details of the pupil could not be released as the department was still notifying his family.
