Spate of North West rapes raises alarm

2012-05-08 21:52
Johannesburg - A spate of at least 13 rapes since the beginning of the weekend in the North West was "alarming", police in the province said on Tuesday.

Colonel Emelda Setlhako said police were concerned after 10 rapes were reported on the weekend alone.

A traditional healer was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping his apprentice at Ipelegeng outside Schweizer-Reneke.

The healer took a group of apprentices to a mountain for training and divided them into pairs.

He dispatched the pairs in different directions, then raped the apprentice he had chosen to pair up with him.

The traditional healer would appear before the Sweizer-Reneke Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

A man, 38, was arrested on Monday after he allegedly raped a 74-year-old woman.

The man, who was known to the woman, allegedly stormed into her house, beat her with a stick and then raped her, Selhako said.

In a separate case, a 21-year-old man was arrested in Ganyesa, near Vryburg, for allegedly raping his girlfriend on Monday.

The woman was standing by the roadside when the man dragged her into the bushes and allegedly assaulted and raped her.

He would appear in Ganyesa Magistrate's Court soon.

Police were also searching for a man who allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman in Kanana, near Orkney, on Monday.

"According to information the victim was walking with her friend on their way home when approached by the suspect who allegedly took out a knife and grabbed the victim," said Setlhako.

He chased the friend away before he dragged the woman into nearby bushes and raped her.
