Spear man fired - report

2012-06-27 10:19

Johannesburg - The Limpopo man accused of defacing The Spear painting has been fired, according to a report on Wednesday.

His now-former employer Mphaphi Machipi told the Sowetan that Louis Mabokela was on sick leave when he defaced the painting.

Mabokela, 25, worked as a taxi driver in Limpopo.

"I was surprised to see Mabokela [on television] defacing the painting of President Jacob Zuma in Johannesburg, while he had told me he was around and not well," said Machipi.

Mabokela told the daily newspaper it was worth losing his job "in order to restore the dignity of the president".

The Spear
depicted President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals, sparking countrywide controversy.

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2012-06-27 11:28

Mabokela should be given an award for doing what very few others would have done. Common, a painting like this is clearly out of order. Debate the different strategies and positions put forward by the different parties, but don't just come with a mindless depiction to ridicule. There is no debate here. It is just a cowardly act to humiliate, but did not want to debate any specific topic in the open, only playing on vague stereotypes. Like the school bully writing something vulgar on the blackboard when nobody is watching. The truth of the vulgarity is never debated; vulgarity and humiliation is never about the truth. It is only about hurting somebody, putting somebody down in the eyes of the people around them, and the bully seldom exposes him/herself. How would you have felt if any of your political leaders where depicted in this way?

      oomkrummel.krummel - 2012-06-27 11:28

      Wot painting.....??

      Rodney - 2012-06-27 11:55

Pierre, Zuma brought the humiliation on himself. By behaving the way he does, he opens himself to ridicule. The man is supposed to be the leader of a country and should therefore behave like one. Simple fact is, he has a primary school education and is not qualified to run anything more than his own life, let alone a country. Do you really think that painting would ever have beendone if he had not made a fool of himself? People get what they deserve.

      sabongam - 2012-06-27 10:48

@pierrefrewd.juice - could you please construct a sentence in vernecular. There are thousands of black people who make way more money than yourself who can't construct a proper English sentence. Please note, I'm not even talking about people with political connections in terms of BEE/Tender purpose if you think I'm going that route. Moral of the story, English is not the 1 and only key that opens doors to either making money or offering employment to the unemployed. Thanks

      pierrefrewd.juice - 2012-06-27 10:55

@sabongam. This is not about making money, its about giving an opinion on a written article. So, when you want people to take your view seriously, you have to present it in proper format. I agree with what you say, but you are completely missing the point.

Mabokela should be given an award for doing what very few others would have done. Common, a painting like this is clearly out of order. Debate the different strategies and positions put forward by the different parties, but don't just come with a mindless depiction to ridicule. There is no debate here. It is just a cowardly act of an artist and gallery, that wanted to humiliate, but did not want to debate any specific topic in the open, only playing on vague stereotypes. Like the school bully writing something vulgar on the blackboard when nobody is watching. The truth of the vulgarity is never debated; vulgarity and humiliation is never about the truth. It is all just about hurting somebody, without exposing him/herself. How would you have felt if any of your political leaders where depicted in this way?

      Ntuthuko M Simelane - 2012-06-27 11:30

i doubt that the painting in question, would have made any sense has it been anybody else, it erupted so much reaction merely because it told the story of a man, dignity is eàrned in a manner that one conducts himself.

This painting's symbolism is becoming more and and more everyday--it symbolises the 'defacing' of the freedom of South Africa, and the denial of freedom of expression, is completely out of order. The president humiliated himself in public and the artist merely depicted a situation in art form. Some see the spearman's actions as vulgar and combined with the political dictator style, is hurting and bullying SA. The fact that this defacer lied to his employer to djol around town, shows the type of minds supporting the clamp down on freedom. Piere de villiers is entitled to share his opinion and he can't expect everybody to feel the same as he does. Art work has the right to exist as to make people think and to evaluate. If you don't like Rembrandt's paintings for example because they depict Christian topics, you don't go and deface them, apart from it that you are breaking the law. This spearman was hanging in an art space, not on a pole on a street corner to excite people. And as is said over and over again--the anc spent more time and effort to TRY and hide the truth than what they are doing educating the youth. Thousand of books are destroyed (under anc command) so they really don't care about educating but only to save their image that has been tarnished by their own president.
