Spike in complaints to Press Ombudsman

2012-07-28 14:35

Durban - The number of complaints lodged with the Press Ombudsman over newspaper reports increased by 95% during the last two years, a SA National Editors' Forum meeting was told on Saturday.

Ombudsman Joe Thloloe told the forum that 246 complaints had been received from mid-September 2011 to the present.

He compared this to 126 complaints about alleged inaccurate or unethical reporting for the corresponding period from 2009 to 2010.

"We are almost being overwhelmed by the number of complaints we are getting," he told the forum in Durban.

When asked if this meant a worsening of journalistic standards, Thloloe said that compared to the vast daily production of news content, the increased number of complaints still represented only a tiny fraction.

Previous reports from the ombudsman on the increase in complaints have been attributed also to an increased awareness among the public of the availability of the self-regulatory mechanism to investigate and act on bad reporting.

Details of complaints and the Press Ombudsman's findings are available on the website.

I would love to know what 90% of those complaints were about! I think it would tell a very differnt story!

I would agree. News24 should follow up (w/accurate reporting) and give a breakdown of what the complaints are for as well as what stories, is there a trend towards a specific reporter/paper and so on...This might give us a more informed opinion why the complaints are up.

We have a situation in this country where the press can't keep up with those who should be exposed for wrong doing. Nobody likes to be exposed in the media so lodging a complaint with the Ombudsman is easy!

ANC probably has them on speed dial.

  • Vince.York - 2012-07-28 17:08

The Media allow TOO MUCH COVERAGE of the ANC and the ANC's nefarious intent. The ombudsman should barr all blatant perverse ANC propagandist reporting and concentrate on Democratisation and individualism and MERIT.

      Lacrimose - 2012-07-28 22:31

Well that's a bit tricksy seeing as ANC controls our lives. We need to know what they are up to. Every day.

      Vince.York - 2012-07-29 11:03

Too true L.wolf........the paid anc Trolls must be queueing at this ombudsman's doors, mind you - - I see a lot of Motlanthe pictures already taken pride of place in government buildings so maybe they know something I don't.
