Starving govt-owned cattle put down

2012-09-14 09:36

Johannesburg - The SPCA has laid a charge of animal abuse against Limpopo's MEC for sports, art and culture, after 34 emaciated cattle at an open air museum had to be put down.

SPCA inspector Anton de Bruyn laid a charge against MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba at the Letsitele police station on Thursday, Beeld reported on Friday.

He said the emaciated Nguni cattle were found dying of hunger and thirst at the Muti Wa Vatsonga open air museum in the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve.

"The animals were so weak that they couldn't get up. We had to put them down then and there," De Bruyn said.

A tourist who visited the museum, situated between Tzaneen and Phalaborwa, had notified the SPCA of the appalling condition of the animals, which had been without cattle feed for a month.

In a separate case, a criminal charge was laid at the Amsterdam police station by the Highveld Animal Protection Society against Mpumalanga's MEC for agriculture, Candith Mashego-Dlamini, and her department head, Nelisiwe Sithole.

This was after 48 pregnant Drakensberger stud cattle starved to death at Athole, a government-owned, experimental farm near the town, Beeld reported.

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-09-14 10:21

You'd think that they could atleast look after their cattle, alas they even fail at this.

      shirley.steenkamp - 2012-09-14 10:37

They dont respect human life so we cant expect them to respect animals! The only cows they like are the "cash cows". Please punish these useless, cruel individuals as much as the law will allow!!!!!

      sekalf.nroc - 2012-09-14 10:54

Useless government - even more useless municipality! The only thing they can do is to open their hand and demand!

To think cattle farming has been in the governments "culture" (how many times have we heard that one when they ritually slaughter the poor cows) for millennia and they still can't even get it right. Imagine what they'll do if they ever nationalize mining (or healthcare or anything else) which has only been in their "culture" for 18 years? Although, to be fair, the government has adapted to the culture of European suits, watches, cars and scotch remarkably well.

  • christian.helberg - 2012-09-14 09:42

This is totally disgusting, the government cannot even feed livestock on a government farm, how the hell do they think they can run a country! SHOCKING!!!

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2012-10-26 12:25

They only feed themselves, look at the size of the majority of the people who work for our government. It is not the first time a few months ago they let stud horses die of hunger and some had to be put down. But the parties of abundance and waste continue for those who are in charge. They cannot even look after their own who are left in the most dire of circustances and abandonment, they are dusgusting!

  • john.turner.58760608 - 2012-09-14 09:44

Can't feed a few cattle, can't get books to schools, can buy Merc's & Beemers. And they want to nationalise the mines.

  • nicolaas.geldenhuys - 2012-09-14 09:44

They wanna take our farms but they can't even look after 34 cattle.

Discovered yesterday that African people (with univ degrees) at my workplace do not think a thing such as 'animal cruelty' exists. Their response: "they cannot talk, how do you know they are suffering?" This article comes as no surprise.

Stop talking to idiots and then bringing colour into it. I`m an African person who has two sausage dogs that have been part of my family for the last 6 years. I treat them as I would a member of my family, buying them little jerseys in winter to keep them warm, allowing them to hop into the car uninvited to come shopping, taking them vets when they seem not well, etc. In short, stupidity and animal cruelty knows no colour.

Quite ironic if you think about it. There are countles of claims to get the "land" back from white farmers. Now what do these people want to do with that land - definitely not farm! Like they say a fish stinks from the head.

You cannot give these effing useless barbarians ANYTHING! Ah, the word hate this government, does not even copme CLOSE to the way I feel about them!

      jpanagidis - 2012-09-14 10:21

@ Themba, good point, ANY human being who causes pain and suffering to an animal is a barbarian. I agree with you 100%.

      john.turner.58760608 - 2012-09-14 10:21

Themba,in many respects I can agree with you. But the major difference between the dog killing and the starving cattle is that killing the dog was a quick rash act but starving cattle to death is a exteremly slow deliberate act.

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-09-14 11:43

@themba...i can almost guarantee you that this idiot who stabbed the dog probably commented such a deed out of pure frustration, was drunk, is mentally unstable ect.. But really knowing day in day out for 30 days that your cattle are starving is bloody pathetic.

      phillip.fischer.39 - 2012-09-14 12:42

Black, White, Indian, Colourd, it does not matter. Abuse an animal and it shows you how little respect you have for ANY life. No wonder that we have such a high murder rate. The dog killing was wrong,as the dogs did NOT fight there was absolutely no need for the LAWYER to pull the knife out. There are lots of ways to get fighting dogs away from each other, but STABBING a dog that's not fighting shows malicious intent. As for the cattle, perfect metaphore for all South Africans. We are all cattle being starved to death by an incompetent government who cares for nothing but themselves and how to save face so they can stay in power and further drag us down.

  • erich.goosen - 2012-09-14 10:02

Condemning a useless, corrupt and cruel provincial government such as Limpopo is not a racist matter but is enough to make any sane person filled with nausea. How can the MEC and other officials in that Department accept their monthly salary knowing that the have foresaken their duties which causes the dreadful death of these poor animals. You are no better that the worst animal on earth.

  • jpanagidis - 2012-09-14 10:03

Sad, sick and disgusting. Shows they have no compassion and no feelings whatsoever besides greed. To let animals starve to the point where they are too weak to get up just shows that these people have NO human emotion WHATSOEVER. God, I would love to chain them to a post in a field and leave them there for three weeks with no food or water! Maybe then they would start to see what it was like for these poor creatures. SICK! And watch, nothing will come of the charges laid, these ignorant bastards will laugh it off and go about their day like nothing happened...

      kimzoh - 2012-09-14 10:42

You know am black and proud, BUT what are black brothers (government) are doing is not right at all! Cyril Ramaphosa has a contract with Lonmin to pay the miners, and Lonmin pays him very well and yet he sits on the money and does nothing??? I mean people died and he has not said a word!!!! Oh and the less informed blame the white man!!!

  • drsparky - 2012-09-14 10:11

I am so tired to be "politically" correct... I have changed my hehaviour and am working so hard on my thinking patterns... then something like this happens and I am back to square one thinking of the "denial" I am expected to be in. Please explain to me why every other country on earth flourishes, even places like India and China with large scale unemployment and illiteracy, but in Africa we see something so different? Explain to me why there is absolutely nothing in Africa that was not brought about by the "colonising oppressors". Explain to me how I should compare European architecture with a kraal and elementary pottery. Was nobel prize winner James Watson right (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/fury-at-dna-pioneers-theory-africans-are-less-intelligent-than-westerners-394898.html)? At the time I didn't want to believe it... but I cannot help it... I try, but I am failing. Please please tell me I am so wrong.

      jpanagidis - 2012-09-14 10:15

I wish I could tell you that you were wrong but my faith in African humanity is slipping away faster that I ever thought possible. Everything gets blamed on said "colonising oppressors" and the whole attitude is one of "take take take" and screw everyone & everything else. I'm surprised they haven't blamed the starving cattle on Apartheid somehow...

  • zelda.dickson - 2012-09-14 10:16

  • diana.vanrensburg - 2012-09-14 10:37

I just can't bear to read this abuse and cruelty - those responsible must be made to "pay" - not in financial or prison terms but by having to look after animals for a protacted length of time where they can be supervised and learn how to care for animals, meanwhile keeping the perpetrators on a minimal diet!

  • luke.dekoker - 2012-09-14 10:42

These cruel non-human idiots must be put down. Looking at it from another angle, I suppose the cows were earmarked for labola for showerhead & the king of zululand but the pathetic anc government "forgot" to budget for food & water??
