State claims copper suspect's bakkie

2013-03-27 16:04

Johannesburg - A bakkie used to collect and transport stolen copper cables was forfeited by its owner and handed over to the State, the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg said on Wednesday.

Around R5 430 suspected to have been proceeds from the theft was also forfeited.

The goods were seized from Ontonio Carule after he was arrested in Pietermaritzburg in August 2012.

Two rolls of copper cables were found in the vehicle.

KwaZulu-Natal regional director of the asset recovery unit, Motlalekhotso Mollele, welcomed the court's decision.

He said copper stolen in one province was being taken and sold in another province as scrap.

"This surreptitious movement of the cable makes arrest of thieves and recovery of the copper much more difficult," he said.
