The Stellenbosch University lecturer who sent an SMS to a student saying, “jou swart moer van die wit boer” has been given the boot.

“The service contract between Stellenbosch University and Dr Anton Stander was terminated this week, after Dr Stander admitted of his own accord that he had made the ... remarks,” read an email from university spokesperson Martin Viljoen.

City Press learnt of the SMS from the sociology student Sikhulekile Duma, who received the text.

Duma entered the number into Facebook, where Anton Stander’s profile appeared.

Stander refused to comment on the SMS when he was contacted by City Press.

According to the statement by the university, Stander said he would like a chance to apologise unconditionally to Duma.

Speaking to City Press today, Duma said: “I’m happy with the action that has been taken because there was overwhelming evidence against him. It is the right step that has been taken by the university.

On whether or not he would be meeting with Stander, Duma said he was still deciding and consulting with those close to him.

Stander was unavailable for comment.
