Johannesburg - Some households in Mothutlung, near Brits in North West, are still without running water, the water affairs department said on Friday.

"Water has not been restored to a 100% level, because an electric motor of the vandalised water pumps was stripped of its parts," said spokesperson Bigboy Moagi.

"Our technicians are working on the stripped electric motor and water will be 100% restored by midday Friday," he said.

On Wednesday, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa promised residents of Mothutlung that water would be completely restored by Friday.

On Thursday, Molewa said progress was being made in restoring the water supply.

"One pump has been refurbished and refitted thus far, and this resulted in bulk supply from the water treatment work being restored at about 60% of normal flow to the reservoirs."

Molewa and North West Premier Thandi Modise would sign a memorandum of understanding in the next few days as part of efforts to alleviate water shortages in all municipalities in the province.

Three people died in Mothutlung in violent protest this week after all three local water pumps broke down.

A memorial service for the three residents is expected to be held at the local community hall on Friday.

The three will be buried at the weekend.
