Stock theft cop shot dead

2011-07-19 12:49

Port Elizabeth - A policeman was shot dead while investigating a stock theft case on a farm near Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Warrant Officer Leon Nieuwoudt, 38, from the Aliwal North stock theft unit, and another officer found four stolen sheep on Monday, Brigadier Marinda Mills said.

His colleague left him at the scene. Nieuwoudt later called in to say he had arrested two people and needed help.

"On the arrival of his colleagues at about 14:15, they found him with two gunshot wounds to his body. His official firearm was missing, but none of his other possessions were taken."

It was not clear if the arrested pair escaped. Mills was not immediately available for comment.

Provincial police commissioner Major General Norma Lady sent her condolences to his family and friends.

"We mourn the loss of a dedicated and experienced police member, but this will not make us despondent," she said.

"Instead, it will motivate us to be more determined than ever to win the fight against crime."

The fact that our government is largely comprised of criminals makes the fight against crime futile.

      cliffarc - 2011-07-19 13:18

      - How's our crime stat's looking Cele ?

      Steen - 2011-07-19 14:15

I am yet to read an article that says a goverment official has killed someone, this guy was killed by criminal who deserve to rot in jail, and if his partner didn't leave him alone this would have prevented. The policeman was not killed by the ANC.

      ANCockup - 2011-07-19 15:02

@Steen does it hurt to be so stupid?

  • Currie_Mafia - 2011-07-19 13:08

Condolences to his family. Shot in the line of duty... I hope that the comments show some respect...

      Fedup - 2011-07-19 13:21

Unfortunately that wont happen ... the racists will be blaming the poor guy for something, like taking away the sheep they stole, RIP my dear and I hope his family finds some comfort during this time.

Oh dear another official police Firearm in the hands of criminals

      Tantrum - 2011-07-19 14:14

And the rest of their arms are the ones that the public handed in at the police stations .....

      Illuminated - 2011-07-19 15:08

all police firearms are in the hands of criminals...

      Airborne68 - 2011-07-19 15:47

No Tantrum, the rest of their arms are probing the inside of your vehicle, waiting for their bribe.

  • Hansie - 2011-07-19 13:08

Shame hope his family finds comfort in this difficult time. This is bad cops are being killed and thugs walk free, even if they were arrested they were going to be on the streets in a weeks time.

  • K_za - 2011-07-19 13:12

Why did his colleague leave him alone?

      Enigma - 2011-07-19 13:37

Does he have a hand in this mans' tragic death? Should be the question.

  • Wayne - 2011-07-19 13:18

I can't even think of something appropriate to say.

  • Suckerz - 2011-07-19 13:18

Condolences to his family... Overseas, cop killers usually get swift justice from the cop's brethren, esp since cop killers are "known" to vigorously resist arrest... no need to say more...

  • Ashvic - 2011-07-19 13:27

WO Nieuwoudt we salute you for your unselfishness and your knowledge that being a Policeman in South Africa is a dangerous job and you stayed whilst others fled. Thank you for your sacrifice. May your family receive the serenity to accept your passing.

Major Gen Norma Lady nogal? Would it not be interesting to peruse her CV? Meteoric rise from tea girl to present rank in 5 yrs through sheer intelligence and brilliance, no doubt?

After something like this happened, police are always promising that they wont stop until the bastards have been found, yet does this happen? an innocent man has yet again paid with his life, everyday we read these articles - GOVERMENT BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY IN OUR COUNTRY, this is the only way to make these criminals become an indangered specie for the better!!!!!! the little less we have left of these bastards the better,,, so very sorry to this family, my heart goes out to you...

  • Tantrum - 2011-07-19 14:10

Skin colour of the arrested please News24. Since it was so boldly stated that the 6 "street renamers" were white I would like to know the skin colour of these 2.

      Airborne68 - 2011-07-19 14:59

You don't often see white grabbing cows do you? OK, when we were younger and p!ssed maybe. AKA grab a granny.

I prefer the wild west type of law when it came to stock thieves. Shoot them on sight.
