Pietermaritzburg - A mass stabbing left one young man dead and six relatives hurt on Sunday afternoon.

It all started over a stolen jacket, said a relative of the dead man, 23-year-old Danisile Mayibenye.

Sive Mayibenye said he and his relatives were sitting together in Tamboville when they saw one of the young men who had robbed him of a jacket and a cellphone two weeks earlier.

“I approached him and asked him to return my jacket because they had returned my cellphone after my father had reported them to their parents,” said Mayibenye, who was in tears.

Stones, knives

He said the other man started throwing stones at them. “We then chased him and he ran away, so we went back into the house,” said Mayibenye.

But then, the attacker and some of his relatives arrived, carrying knives, bushknives and other lethal weapons.

Sbulelo Maluka, Bhalisile Maliwa and Danisile Mayibenye were stabbed.

Maluka and Maliwa were rushed by a private vehicle to Northdale Hospital while Danisile Mayibenye died on the scene. Four others suffered minor injuries and were treated by paramedics on the scene.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said a man was declared dead at the scene, while the others who were injured were questioned by the police.

Danisile’s step-father, Elijah Gwetyana, described him as a fine young man who enjoyed drinking but never hurt anyone. Gwetyana said Danisile worked for oil firm Sea Lake.

Grudge

“I was not at home when this happened but I suspect that there was a grudge between the boys because I had recently intervened and asked the [some of the] boys to return the cellphone and a jacket they had robbed from my son,” he said.

Gwetyana said he saw about four young men in a police van who were arrested in connection with the murder of his stepson.

Residents in the area accused the attackers of being violent and alleged that they had killed another person in the area before this.

Attempts to get a comment from the police were unsuccessful.
