Cape Town - The death of well-known journalist Mandy Rossouw has prompted a stream of tributes on Twitter while condolences have poured in from government figures.

International and local media personalities have tweeted en masse to express their sympathy after Rossouw's sudden passing.

The South African correspondent for BBC news, @BBCKarenAllen, tweeted: "I'm speechless to learn of the passing of Mandy Rossouw. She was my SA mentor, a wonderful colleague and dear friend. What a terrible loss."

Author and columnist, @MaxduPreez, said: "I'm saddened by Mandy Rossouw's death. Lovely human being & could have become one of our great editors."

Talk radio host, @RediTlhabi, tweeted: "Finding out a good friend & colleague has passed away, while on air, is hard. Cannot believe Mandy Rossouw is no more. Devastated. RIP Mands".

Rossouw who was a prominent political reporter also received tributary tweets from political figures like Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba.

"A sad and tragic farewell to a great journalist, Mandy Rossouw. Condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. SA is the poorer," @mgigaba tweeted.

The associate editor for the Mail and Guardian, @phillipdewet, lauded Rossouw for breaking the Nkandla scandal:  "If you're wondering why we feel the loss of Mandy Rossouw so keenly, here's a good example: she broke [the] Nkandla see article."

Rossouw was an international correspondent for Media24. She also worked has a political reporter for City Press, Beeld, and Eyewitness News.

City Press editor, Ferial Haffajee, described Rossouw as a talented writer who was dedicated to her work.

"She was a queen-pin and scoop-getter of our newsroom and a talented all-rounder. Beyond that, she was a dear friend for whom no effort was ever too much," Haffajee said in a statement.

Media24 CEO Esmaré Weideman said in a statement: "Today we mourn the sudden passing of Mandy Rossouw, one of our brightest journalistic minds and a dear and much admired colleague.

"Condolences to her colleagues, friends and family. What a devastating blow to journalism, politics and Media24."

According to Beeld, Rossouw was admitted to hospital at the weekend with chest pains, but was discharged a few hours later.

Rossouw’s body was found in her flat on Monday after she failed to arrive for a dinner date.

The cause of death was not known.

Her body would be flown to Cape Town and funeral arrangements would be relayed as soon as they were available.
