Street child, 13, arrested for murder

Johannesburg - A 13-year-old street child appeared briefly in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old boy on New Year's Eve, it was reported on Thursday.

Archibald Lethabele was stabbed in the chest at about 23:00 in Bophelong and died, Beeld reported.

"The children bumped into each other in the street, but it's not clear what exactly happened or what the reasons were.... Archibald was stabbed with a knife," said Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn.

"What complicated the investigation is that the suspect was a street child, but they managed to track him down and he was arrested on Monday."

The alleged murderer was being kept in a place of safety, he said.
