Man dies in 'street racing' crash

2011-02-28 07:52

Cape Town - A man died on Sunday when he lost control of his car during an alleged street race on the R300 Stock Road in Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said: "It is believed that a group of young men were racing their vehicles, when the Honda that the young man in his early twenties was driving, suddenly veered out of control and started to roll."

The car crashed down an embankment, and the man was flung from the driver's seat.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they could see a large amount of debris from a wrecked vehicle, but not the actual vehicle, she said.

The man was declared dead on the scene, she said.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man who died was not involved in the race, but the three cars that were street racing caused him to lose control of his car. He was apparently on his way home from work.

Police are investigating.

      Rod - 2011-02-28 13:18

Theres no money in it...Its all about ego and pride.

      unique - 2011-02-28 18:58

I agree to that, only greating jobs

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:05

Well, I've seen Metro cops dicing in Voortrekker Road also-with their Metro vehicles.

  • katfiro - 2011-02-28 08:27

Ah shame!!! i feel sorry for his family, but they all know what they are doing is illegal and this is why!!! its not a controlled race and there are no stand-by medics in-case of situations like this! hopefully this will serve as a warning to the other fools out there who are still doing ILLEGAL street racing, and to those who attend to watch the racing, who are just as guilty!!

      AJ - 2011-03-01 05:07

and to the innocent guy on his way home from work who died, like in this case?.............

  • Anchorman - 2011-02-28 08:33

i blame the authorities cause where were they, they know about all this illegal racing but yet they dont do anything about it, instead of getting a proper facility to do the racing

      johnnydee - 2011-02-28 08:54

There is a proper facility - Killarney

      Kaapie - 2011-02-28 09:52

Blame the authorities se voet.. Blame the driver, his buddies and the other idiots that races with him or rather raced with him.

      Krush - 2011-03-01 07:18

I blame the driver because they know its illegal to do it. Why must people always have to enforce the law. We are adults and well aware of wrong and right. I feel sorry for innocent bystanders who could have been hurt walking past etc.

  • brinjal - 2011-02-28 08:34

Want to race under FAIR conditions then join a club & race where racing is supposed to take place, on a track.

  • 40 Something - 2011-02-28 08:35

This man's incredible stupidity had led to a family who is now traumatised. Thank God one else was hurt or killed. Let's hope this will be lesson to all the other twats who drive like maniacs on our roads!

      Chantelle Donne Palm - 2011-02-28 13:51

are you blind... the article clearly states at the bottom that he he wasnt involved in the racing but that he was on his way home from work... i hope you feel like a twat!!!!

      ivory - 2011-02-28 14:30

You idiot! Read till the bottom - the man who died was not involved in the race, but the three cars that were street racing caused him to lose control of his car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      DW - 2011-02-28 15:51

As I understand it, the article did not state this at first but was edited afterwards.

      AJ - 2011-03-01 05:08

@DW - you have a good point - these articles do tend to change with some important facts add well after they are initially opened for comment.

  • Anchorman - 2011-02-28 08:38

    It will never stop

      Rod - 2011-02-28 13:19

Oh it will...especially when petrol goes to R20 per litre

      Anchorman - 2011-02-28 14:17

at Rod that will never ever stop them they dont care about that and they dont even run on unleaded or LRP they run AV-gas

      Oryx_ZA - 2011-03-01 09:13

      and AV gas is free?

  • Vaal Donkie - 2011-02-28 08:39

I keep my racing to Killarney. That way the only thing I have to worry about is Honda's crashing into my backside when their brakes fail.

      HondaTypeR - 2011-03-02 10:30

Vaal Donkie , your mom loved riding in my Honda

      Vaal Donkie - 2011-03-31 19:36

      Nope. She's a BMW lady.

  • Anchorman - 2011-02-28 08:39

if the cops come they just leave to go to another spot and same thing happens at that spot

  • rammstein.f4n - 2011-02-28 08:42

    Good riddance!

      Deon - 2011-02-28 13:14

The deceased was not one of the racers!!!!!!!!

      Barry - 2011-02-28 16:21

It should really be my deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased whose life was cut off so tragically by these morons. You also need to retract this statement and apologise to the family.

      closedeye - 2011-03-01 12:04

Rammstein.f4n you are a real stupid idiot. If you really have the capacity to actually read the article thenyou will see he was not involved.

      rammstein.f4n - 2011-03-01 14:43

closedeye refrain from making such comments. This article was edited afterwards and News24 keeps deleting my (and others') comments stating that.

Die vinnigste Hobda Civics en Toyotas in die land hardloop in Kuilsrivier, 24/7 en hier is niemand op diens om iets daaromtrent te doen nie. Ek verwag soortgelyke ongelukke eersdaags...

  • jh.racer2 - 2011-02-28 09:03

This is sad... think about what the families have to go through. Please go easy on the comments people. It's not just a life that was lost but a family that's hurt by it. Let this be a lesson for others out there, I'd say: "grow up and live life" Many of the youth are just there to show off and try and fit into the "society". If you want to race...why not join the go-karts and take it from there? What is the police still investigating?

      Cameron - 2011-02-28 09:19

Honestly???? I can think of better less "minnute ego" related manners to go out and "live life" and fit into society in ways that does not include putting my life and those around me into danger, although i share sympathy for his family, i have no sympathy for this tosser, you are more than likely one of the guys who take part in this kind of action at 2 or 3 in the morning without any consideration for the people who are sleeping around you and have to work the next day. As far as investigations, they probably trying to find the other tossers who were part of the illegal street racing. So if anything GP(Gangsters Paradise)Racer2, i think you need to do some growing up!

      DSG - 2011-02-28 09:34

Would your comment still be the same if he crashed into and killed one of your family members? i don't think so. People are sick and tired of these morons thinking that they own the roads. Go race on the track, Killarney is available and dirt cheap, use it. FYI im in my 20s too, just in case people thing its an old mans comment :)

      DeanBrn - 2011-02-28 09:43

Cameron, i think you completely missed the point that jh(not GP, as you put it).racer2 was trying to convey. He is saying that other street racers should learn from this accident. Grow up and live life by not putting yourself and others at risk on the roads. Take up go-karting instead. Seems like he is offering a solution, which is more than what you brought to the table.

  • Brodie84 - 2011-02-28 09:04

"When paramedics arrived at the scene, they could see a large amount of debris from a wrecked vehicle, but not the actual vehicle, she said" Awesome writing :)

These punks in their "lighties cars" will never learn.

      alousav - 2011-02-28 09:31

There is a punk who raes his motorbike at horrific speed up and down Rooihuiskraal road, Centurion, every single day and he has been reported. I am yet to see a cop sitting anywhere looking out for him. Something will only be done when he mows down some innocent passenger or goes through someones garden wall!

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:13

That is nothing, at Paul Kruger in Pretoria, the Taxis bypass the traffic on the pavement! Yesterday a pedestrian was almost run over.

  • DeanBrn - 2011-02-28 09:10

Wow. What an angry mob you are?!? I agree that illegal street racing should not be condoned and is a danger to not only the drivers but innocent bystanders too. We were all young once and who didn't take chances not full knowing the consequences of your actions? Hate speech is not going to solve the problem however seems to be the only way people think they can get a message across in our country. This is tragic! Admittedly it's complete negligence but tragic none the less. I wonder how any of you would feel if this were your son?? Would you give him a proper burial or write him off as an 'idiot', 'chump' or 'rubbish' and start again?

      Totman - 2011-02-28 09:40

You don't know these races. They not only kill themselves or bystanders. They races while other cars are on the roads. Some race on nitro. They pop-up at different places and are very sneaky. It is a dangerous situation. I hear what you say regarding the judgement towards the driver and the feelings of his relatives, but maybe it is time that they get shamed, even after there death. Just maybe the racer will think twice. Why are the people not allowed to express their anger when it is the truth. This "making everyone holy" or respect the dead to save some-one's feelings vs danger to the community, seeing that he bring it on himself, is not on.

      Kaapie - 2011-02-28 09:56

What is tragic about being stupid! Of course we were all young but that does not mean being stupid. Get a life and stop trying to impress other people.

      DeanBrn - 2011-02-28 10:10

I actually do know all about these races. I used to take part in it quite a few years ago. One of my closest friends was killed in a tragic accident and he wasn't even driving. He was sleeping in the passenger seat when they were hit from behind by people racing on the highway. I learnt from his misfortune, haven't raced on the roads ever since. I have no issue with anyone expressing their opinions - it's the manner in which it's expressed. I will be the last person to preach holiness as I’m not even bothered with religion. Don't you see? Its malice, pure hatred and bitterness which is seeping from people's mouths?

      DW - 2011-02-28 15:55

It seems that sad truth is that an innocent bystander WAS the victim here and not one of the racers. I wonder if they will stop, but I doubt it. They probably simply drove away to race another day.

  • preshengovender69 - 2011-02-28 09:14

You should only race on your playstation

      sakkie - 2011-02-28 19:43

Preshen - I do believe that is the first sensible thing you've ever commented

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:16

      Remember to buckle up ;-)

  • wflouw - 2011-02-28 09:17

Good riddence to bad rubish. I hate people like that, and believe they get what the deserve. They indanger the lives of other people as well. If you have a death whish, go swim with sharks or something. But don't expose innocent people to a potential dissaster - completely irresponsible. Just last year a couple of innocent people were killed as a result of a street racing accident gone wrong!

  • molefeP - 2011-02-28 09:18

    No pills for stupidity!

  • alwyn - 2011-02-28 09:24

I heard them racing, called the cops twice and they never showed. On the other hand, I'm glad this idiot is dead. These kids drive like this during normal hours in traffic. They have no care in the world and certainly no care for you as a fellow road user. With bucket seats so low, these idiots can't even see out the front window. Oh and then there is the REAR SPOILER mounted on a front wheel drive vehicle. Only idiots will do that. The spoiler only starts doing it's job at around 200km/h, and when it does, it removes pressure from the front of the car, hence less front wheels on the road and less tractions and less speed. Bunch of idiots!

      Cameron - 2011-02-28 09:29

@alwyn, i couldnt have said it any better myself!

      Nishaam - 2011-02-28 14:48

Your take on the laws of physics is amazing :-) LOL

      Jacqui - 2012-02-29 06:39

If you read the article properly, you might see that he was not involved in the street racing! I agree with your general sentiments but get the fact straight.

  • alousav - 2011-02-28 09:26

Sorry to say this but it's no loss. I am sorry for his family but now some innocent pedestrians are spared their lives.

  • nadeemessack - 2011-02-28 09:37

What a load of BS!!! I suggest Media24 get their facts straight, Just because it was a "honda", the guy was "RACING??" FFS! BTW it was a Ballade, not a civic, more ACCURATE reporting EISH!!! Eyewitnesses on the scene said HE WAS NOT RACING,other cars that WERE racing, caused him to lose control. RIP to the driver of the BALLADE and Prayers to his family and friends. BUNTA

      Kaapie - 2011-02-28 09:58

Oh ok and you saw everything.. Who cares what type a car it was. The blame game.. 'it wasnt me.. its the other people that caused me to do it.. You're just another lot of wannabee's

      Worldwise - 2011-02-28 10:13

If he wasn't racing he was going blerry fast as there was not much left of the car. Idiot also wasn't wearing a seat belt. Bet he was a wannabee racer that tried to pump up his ego in front of the racers. The eyewitnesses are also to blame for spectating at an illegal race.

      Gabbi - 2011-02-28 11:25

the fact that u guys say its ok, n after his passing decide to call him childish names are sick! i hope that the day ur brother/sister/mom/dad n kids decide to have a drink n drive home, writing their car off n being killed doesnt result in them being called ignoramous fools! WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!!

      T4D - 2011-03-01 08:43

i agree the reporter should make sure of the facts 1st...& its so scary it states he wasnt driving but yet there r still stupid comments like"i'm glad the idiot is dead". its sad :-(

  • Susannomore - 2011-02-28 09:39

Let this be a lesson to those that think they can abuse our roads and put us and our children at risk. Street racing should be banned, legal or illegal. It is simply not safe

  • lenhard1984 - 2011-02-28 09:57

Poor VTEC, it deserved so much better

  • Miro20xe - 2011-02-28 10:00

You guys are a bunch of wankers. You are so quick to judge, not knowing the full story. Bloody morons... Drunk driving causes 100-fold the amount of deaths that street racing does, so next time u take that dop and drive home frm the party like i knw so many of u do, think about the comments i'll be making when u wrap ur car around a pole

      HondaTypeR - 2011-02-28 10:47

      agreed my friend...

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:24

You're just jealous that you can not wank, that is why you guys race, you don't have the size to feel man enough, so your car must make up for it. With all the money you've spent on your car, rather buy tweezers. At least the worst that can happen is, you can poke your eye out.

  • Ray786 - 2011-02-28 10:01

I personally know the driver of the Honda and no he was not racing! As soon as the media sees a Honda involved in an accident suddenly the owner was racing.Im sick of all this sterrotypical bullsh**. I would of love to see your guys comments had this been a friend or family member of yours. You people have no respect for the deceased. As for sipho with his racist remark, wait wait you have internet in the townships? People seriously have some respect.

      DW - 2011-02-28 15:59

He must have been going helluva fast for the car to literally disintegrate and he wasnt wearing his seatbelt. But you are right. These commenters here are insensitive. My condolences to the family.

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:29

Condolences to your friend, but honestly, anybody driving wihtout a seatbelt is plain stupid. A friend of mine died many years ago in a 60km/h accident! Hit the windscreen and broke his neck.

  • Cynical_BStd - 2011-02-28 10:06

You wouldnt be congratulating this death if this person was your son, relative or family - most of you complaining here most probaly whinge about all the speed traps that you get caught you bunch of hypocrites

  • Eish! - 2011-02-28 10:06

Ag shame. But really, do we care? Live by the sword, die by the sword.

  • Blood_Doll - 2011-02-28 10:21

Sipho, oh ye of inbreeding, if, in your ignorance, you actually attend one of these abhorrent things you'd notice that it is not colour specific. People of all races are into cars and whatnot. This typical behaviour you speak of also stems from another atypical behaviour, incest, which you must no something about. Although. I have no pity for this sod that died, I have sympathy for his family. You, Sipho, should stick to courting family members - each one of your comments reek of inanity. You know that word, right?

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:33

Yip, the Honda Civic that struck the off duty Metro cop in Voortrekker Rd (with the baby flying throught the windscreen) was full of darkies.

      Picasso - 2011-03-01 07:34

Oh, here is the link http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Baby-saved-after-drag-race-crash-20101108. I was at the roadhouse, the Honda was full of darkies, racing is NOT a color thing.

  • Revnhevn - 2011-02-28 10:21

      faiekg - 2011-02-28 11:08

I think its sad that people post without knowing the complete facts , I guess its an emotional thing , anyways , the facts are unclear and I urge people to first wait before they convey their joy at the lost of a life. According to reports from people I know this guy was in fact NOT racing but rather a victim of guys that raced past him. Guys lets respect the deceased and at least afford his the benefit of the doubt in this case , this could have been mine and your friend , brother , father , son etc etc.

  • NatsBatz - 2011-02-28 10:27

In this exact circumstance, if you take into ACCOUNT what the eye witnesses have said, this gentleman was infact NOT racing. its unfortunate that we have so many ignorant/narrow minded fools commenting on this article who justify a "life lost racing" as ok. my condolences to his family and friends, may he R.I.P

      Well said :-)

  • razor.l2.69 - 2011-02-28 11:05

MMM honestly I was at a time one of these so called idiot street racers I grew up got married have a child and have never visited or raced for almost 3 to 4 years now years now. Everyone was young at a stage you do stupid stuff and you only realize it sometimes when it’s too late. I see allot of the people here have allot to say but i am 100 percent sure that they themselves don’t live by the law how many of you that commented drove under the influence? iam sure 9 out of 10 of you has done this some point in time so in essence you were also endangering other people’s lives ? And before you make stupid comments have a good look at yourself and stop judging other people when you no better. Condolences to his family

      eno2 - 2011-03-01 10:21

Yes. Also, how about driving over the speed limit? I bet most of you people who comment do not adhere to the speed limit, which is also ILLEGAL and also cause a lot of accidents!

  • HondaTypeR - 2011-02-28 11:06

To all of those who have something negative to say about what happened are all hypocrites.. I am in no way a supporter of street racing and i am personally a promoter of keeping the racing at Killarney and off the streets in Cape Town... But how many of you have driven drunk ? How many of you still drive intoxicated on our roads ? Drunk driving is the number one reason for deaths on our roads and i bet you are all very guilty of this. And no , i NEVER drive when i am intoxicated. @Sipho , you are nothing but a narrow minded bafoon... how many cars on the N2 from the townships are not road worthy ? How many of the drivers don’t have licenses ? How many of them simply don’t know how to drive ? Stop being a racist and look at your own kind 1st and you will see dangerous and bad driving. My sympathy to the family of the deceased… To the rest out there , look at yourself 1st and how you make the road dangerous before you comment negatively on such situations… but I bet you are all simply to ignorant to realize that what the most of you do on the road can cost someone their life

  • gambit786 - 2011-02-28 11:10

To the drivers family and friends, deepest condolences. It's not easy losing a loved one. To those with the harsh comments, rather keep it to yourselves.

@Sipho, u are a twit of the highest order. Condolences to the family of the deceased. If using Sipho's reasoning then the following would apply: every black cannot drive because taxis make accidents every day and kill bread winners by the dozen and they would qualify as the worst drivers. Or black women with code 10 licenses who drive big cars that are dented and bruised because they cannot drive for sh*t. So Sipho guess what, you the plank

so if we all know he was hit by another car , why/who wrote this one sided article - clearly it's aim was to make it seem as if the deceased was the main culprit - he was in this instance the innocent bystander you are all going on about no matter what , he has lost his life - his family has suffered a major loss. rIP dude

I dont get it, they say this man was not involved in the 'Street Racing'. So he is not at fault. Seems to me an innocent driver at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Although it would've helped if he had his seatbelt on.

Alot of the misconceptions were caused by this article filled (with assumptions). Readers shouldnt be so naive. This article is evident that the media play a big role in creation of public opinions and Im glad that News24 had since edited the headline and article since publication this morning. This poor man was being persucuted due to incorrect facts. Hope this shuts up all you heartless cynics.

How can you persecute a dead person??

      Kvds - 2011-02-28 13:44

The deceased reputation is/was being persecuted/ attacked! Those with half a brain know what Im getting at! MORON!!!

      sirpreme.overlord - 2011-02-28 13:54

Why would it bother a dead person?

      Kvds - 2011-02-28 13:59

MORON- Although I shouldnt dignify your comments with a response. It matters to he's friends and family and those who knew him. He was not the reckless driver that news24 portrayed him to be but he was the victim and he deserves to RIP without a tarnished reputation.
