Johannesburg - A North West University student has appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder and sexual assault of a 14-year-old boy, according to a report on Wednesday.

Beeld reported that Danté Chan was found murdered at the 20-year-old student's home on July 31. He had been stabbed 36 times and there was a steak knife protruding from his left shoulder.

According to the newspaper, the student's father had been in a five-year relationship with Chan's mother.

Investigating officer Johannes Booysens told the court he took the student, who may not be named until he has pleaded, to a doctor for DNA and blood testing a few days after the murder.

"He told me then that he had murdered Chan because he was jealous of him," Booysens said.

Surveillance camera footage obtained from a local Pick n Pay the day before the murder reportedly showed the student purchasing a knife.

Advocate Ben Botes, for the student, told Beeld his client intended pleading not guilty. The 20-year-old was denied bail and remained in custody.
