Student cop's trial postponed

Johannesburg - Judge Kathleen Satchwell postponed student constable Sipho Mbatha's murder trial again on Thursday, because of her workload.

"I am sorry to everyone who had to wake up early to be here, but there are two other cases before court that came before Mbatha's," said Satchwell.

She first postponed the trial on Monday.

The accused in the other two cases were in custody, while Mbatha was out on bail, she said.

"This does not mean that your grief is not as bad or terrible, but the court has to make decisions."

Mbatha allegedly killed 16-year-old Thato Mokoka during a raid in Braamfischerville, Soweto on 14 February.

Mokoka was shot three times with an R5 rifle while lying on the ground on his stomach outside the home of his grandmother Sibyl Mokoka.

Mbatha claimed he bent over to search Mokoka when the rifle went off.

Media also applied to allow videos and photographs to be taken in court during the trial.

The matter was postponed to Monday.
