Johannesburg - A Varsity College student was wrongfully arrested for a shoot-out and robbery at Johannesburg shopping mall, according to a report on Tuesday.

Jason Modisenyane, 20, was released without appearing in court on Monday, The Star newspaper reported.

Police investigators had conceded he had nothing to do with the armed robbery of a jewellery shop at Randpark Ridge shopping mall, north of Johannesburg, at the weekend.

Four people, including a policewoman and a toddler, were shot and wounded.

Modisenyane told the daily he was on his way to Cresta shopping centre to meet a friend when he was arrested.

"Two police officers pulled out on a traffic circle just two houses away from my house. A female officer instructed me to put my hands up while pointing her firearm at me.

"The male officer [fired a] shot in the air and I was told to lie down.

"A motorist told the police that the men were hiding in the nearby country club, but they didn't listen," said Modisenyane.

Four people appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the robbery.

But 60% of them bunk firearm training and shooting practice. On Top of that the acting Police Commissioner encourages shooting practice at least ONCE a year ! Please stop insulting the Keystone Cops. I can think of nothing more scary that having my life protected by these untrained buffoons.I feel much safer when I see them eating KFC at least they know how to do that well!

  • nokuthandwa - 2012-06-19 11:27

As much as people are taking this lightly, saying wrong place, wrong time etc lets think of what could have happened to this student during his arrest. What if he had been raped by his Cellmates or killed? These things to happen. Anyway, am glad his name got cleared. I have no comment about the cop firing into the air! HONESTLY! Where are we, the WILD WILD WEST!

Are you people aware that these are the same cops that were praised for quickly arresting the perpetrators?

  • Werner - 2012-06-19 11:32

This ties in to the Carte Blanche story of wrongful arrests just to make targets... Disgraceful!!
