Johannesburg - A labour union complained on Wednesday that Stellenbosch University students threw eggs at its members during the recent public service strike.
Helshoogte Hostel students were seen doing this, said National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union spokesperson Suraya Jawoodeen.
"These activities point to a much untransformed university student body... that does not care about the plight of the workers and the working class in general."
The strike took place in front of the Stellenbosch Hospital, where a resident also allegedly attempted to drive into the picket line.
Jawoodeen said police "just stood there" and pointed "guns at our peaceful picketing members and threatening them with arrests".
She said it was a sign of disrespect to throw an egg at someone who was seeking to defend their own living conditions.
University spokesperson, Martin Viljoen, said management of was unaware of the incident, but would investigate the matter.
"Incidents of this nature are viewed in a serious light and the University will not hesitate to act according to its Rules for Students," Viljoen said.
