Pretoria - An 18-year-old girl attempted suicide after failing Grade 10 twice and being called stupid by her father.

The unidentified teen was refused re-admission to her high school in Winterveldt north of Pretoria after which she attempted to end her own life, reported the TimesLive.

She was admitted to hospital and was receiving counselling.

The girl’s father said the school told him to enrol her at a college or at an adult basic education centre.

He said: “I regret calling her stupid. I am short-tempered and I felt she was not serious about her schoolwork.”

"All I need is a chance, support and help in the problematic maths literacy and business economics," the girl said before bursting into tears.

Department of basic education spokesperson Hope Mokgathle said the school was within its rights to deny the teenager re-admission.

"If [she] has failed Grade 10 for the second time, the school has a right to do that. Grade 10s are [normally] 15 or 14-years-old," Mokgathle said.
