'Sunday Rapist' cries as ex-wife testifies

2012-07-30 16:47

Johannesburg - Johannes Jacobus (Jaco) Steyn, dubbed the "Sunday rapist", cried as his ex-wife took the stand in his trial on Johannesburg's East Rand on Monday.

He is being tried in the High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Alberton for the murder of schoolgirls Louise de Waal and Lazanne Farmer.

The court ordered that the ex-wife not be identified.

Steyn is also charged with 11 counts of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of kidnapping, one of attempted sexual assault, one of attempted kidnapping, and two of assault.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

When asked why he always brought a Bible into court with him, Steyn said: "It gives me courage".

He said his brother gave him the Bible in 2007.

Steyn said Psalm 43, especially, gave him courage. He kept a bookmark with pictures of his wife and child on that page.

The 11 girls Steyn allegedly attacked between 2008 and 2011 were aged between 11 and 18.

What a nice christian he is, always carrying his bible with him. All he has to do before he dies is to ask forgiveness for his sins and he will go straight to heaven. Praise the Lord for christian scum!

      jody.beggs - 2012-07-30 17:14

I'm still trying to get answers as to how , someone like this can get to heaven. It just doesn't make sense to me because if his victim was atheist or non-believer , she be in hell right now! Is that supposed to make sense... Although all xians are sinners , after all we're supposed to be born in sin , but at what point is the cut off ? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2163771/Why-criminals-believe-heaven-Study-finds-crime-rates-vary-according-religious-beliefs.html Scary stuff , boils down to the loving or hating god. The sunday rapist must believe in the loving god... Damn the man.

Nico, what Jaco did is not Christian behavior at all and I can't adequately express how disgusted I am by his sickening behavior AND by bringing the Bible into this. Our Lord Christ stands for peace and love. The second most important commandment is love your neighbor like yourself. Jaco did not. If he is truly sorry about his actions, and only God knows what goes on in his mind, I guess He'll see the Kingdom. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes when the day of reckoning comes, though. You are a blasphemer and have no respect for your creator.

'Sunday Rapist' admitted crime: Ex Wife http://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-courts/sunday-rapist-admitted-crime-ex-wife-1.1352408 Why is it that IOL has the full article and not just the same details that appears in every 'Sunday Rapist' article on News24? I'm really not sure how this could even qualify as an article. A little disappointed News24.

There is supposedly one rape every 17 seconds in this country, but on an unfortunate day last year (which happened to be a Sunday) this man allegedly killed one teenage girl and raped another. For this the media have dubbed him the 'Sunday rapist'. A woman is raped every 17 seconds and somehow the media in this country give this man a whole day (Sunday) of his own. How cynical ... How shameless ... but it seems that we are all ok with it. Keep in mind that this rape is different from all other rapes because the perp has a moniker, he is the 'Sunday rapist'. I wonder how many people realise that the business of the media has become the packing, branding, marketing and distribution of other people's misery. You think that I am exaggerating? Ok, the next time you pick up a newspaper try to count the number of positive stories against the number of negative stories. Now here is my question to the media, "Why didn't you dubb this man the Sunday Killer?" Did you forget that a young girl died as a consequence of this man's actions?

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-07-30 19:04

What a brilliant well thought out comment. I am in complete agreement.

      piet.strydom - 2012-07-31 08:26

@Manu - I agree with you wholeheartedly - but remember the media only does that because it works. That is what people want them to do.

      mimi.visser - 2012-07-31 17:43

Although you are right that it's sad that this man is getting so much attention when there are so many more other victims out there, he is dubbed the "Sunday Rapist", because that's what the press were calling him before he was captured. They did not know who the "Sunday rapist" was, they just knew there was a man out there kidnapping and raping young girls, usually on a Sunday. After Steyn handed himself over to the police (as they were looking for him for the murder of Louis De Waal), that was when he confessed to being the "Sunday rapist".
