Johannesburg - Some Alexandra, Johannesburg, residents said they felt inspired after speaking to political activist Mamphela Ramphele on Wednesday.

Patience, a 20-year-old Alexandra Extension Nine resident who spoke on stage, said she did not know Ramphele was coming, but was impressed with what she saw.

"It's something good for us, the community of Alexandra. This will uplift a lot of people and motivate people," she said.

"It's quite inspirational."

Patience said she would strongly consider voting for Ramphele's political platform, Agang, in the next election.

However, Ramphele needed to talk with communities across South Africa and not just in a few places, said Patience.

"I hope that she means what she was saying. I want to believe what she was saying."

Liver Makelane, who lives in an RDP house, wished Ramphele good luck.

"She's a hard worker and she's doing her best to help the community. We'll vote for her. She's doing well, we have to push her forward."

However, the African National Congress still had a lot of support and would not be voted out of power in the next election, Makelane said.

Norman Ngobeni, an unemployed resident of Alexandra, said he would also support Ramphele.

"She's working hard to help. She's friendly, she doesn't have an ugly heart. She will change things."

Ramphele visited the Ratang Bana orphanage on Wednesday as part of Agang's consultation process. As Ramphele spoke, children squirmed around the gathered crowd and played nearby in a crowded playground.

People walked off the street to listen as residents addressed the crowd and Ramphele.

Ramphele, flanked on stage by two security guards, and wearing a jacket and floral dress, listened and interacted with the crowd.

The businesswoman and political activist would visit the Thusong Youth Centre, also in Alexandra, next.

Ramphele, an anti-apartheid activist and businesswoman, in February launched what she termed a "party political platform" called Agang SA (Setswana for "build South Africa").
