Cape Town - Cape Town surfer, Brett Archibald, says he had lost his will to live after disappearing overboard off the coast of Indonesia but managed to "pull myself together".

Archibald went overboard while relieving himself from a bout of sea sickness and had been drifting 12 nautical miles east of Sipura Island. He was discovered after a massive search and rescue effort.

In a telephonic interview with Surfing Life, Archibald expressed his incredulity at the 28.5-hour ordeal.

“It was insane, [it] was just insane. I actually gave up. I went under and said, “screw this, I can’t carry on”. But I couldn’t swallow water, I couldn’t get my lungs to take the water and I kept coming back up,” he said.

“So then I pulled myself together, said “Okay, we need to keep going here,” and kept swimming and treading water,” he added.

Archibald recalled numerous attempts to swim towards nearby islands but was pulled away by the current each time he got closer.

A doctor was on board the Australian boat, Barrenjoey, which came to his rescue. He was treated for wounds including a nose pecked by seagulls.

Yet, the surfer is keen to finish his trip saying “we’ve got eight days left of our trip, I can’t go to hospital; we’ve got to surf”.
