Suspect injured in shootout

Mthatha - A 32-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after he was shot in both legs during a shootout with police, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

The man, who was being investigated by police for an armed robbery in Elliotdale on Monday, was found in Mthatha at around 23:00 on Thursday, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

A shootout between the suspect and police broke out, and the man was shot in both legs before he was arrested, Fatyela said.

Police guard

He was under police guard in Mthatha General hospital and would be charged with armed robbery.

On Monday night, seven men were involved in a shootout with police during an armed robbery in Elliotdale.

One man was shot dead in the incident.

The remaining six men fled and police were still investigating, Fatyela said.
