Johannesburg - A suspected criminal has been killed in Seshego, Limpopo after a shoot-out with officers from the dog unit, police said on Wednesday.

Officers from the K9 Unit were led to Moses Modiba, 38, on Tuesday night by another man who claimed he had been walking with his girlfriend when Modiba pointed a gun at him, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

"The man ran away and the suspect fired shots at him. He was not injured," said Mulaudzi.

When police arrived, Modiba shot at them. They returned fire and killed him.

It was then discovered that the woman, Kate Serite, 22, had been stabbed with a knife.

She was admitted to hospital but later discharged as her injuries were not too severe.

A 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, as well as a bloodied knife, were found in the Modiba's possession.

His links to other crimes committed in the area were being investigated.
