Johannesburg - Pretoria police have told how a man, arrested in connection with the hijacking of a taxi, tried to cut his throat in Mamelodi police station.
Inspector Percy Morokane said that while police were booking two men in connection with the stolen taxi one grabbed an empty glass bottle, broke it and cut himself on the neck and stomach. He threatened suicide.
An inspector in charge of the community service centre (formerly called a charge office) managed to dissuade him and he was treated in hospital and returned to police custody.
The two men, aged 30 and 34, were arrested after police got a tip-off about a stolen taxi in Mamelodi. They found the vehicle and arrested the two men.
The car had been hijacked from a man about 20:00 on New Year's Day in Winterveld, north-west of Pretoria. No one was injured during the hijacking.
Morokane said the two men were due to appear in Mamelodi magistrate's court on Friday in connection with the possession of stolen property and would then be transferred to Ga-Rankuwa magistrate's court to face a charge of armed robbery.
