Suspected ATM bomber re-arrested
Johannesburg - A suspected ATM bomber has been re-arrested in Cleveland, on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Monday.
"It is alleged that the suspect was on the run after escaping from custody. Police received information that he was sleeping in Cleveland," Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.
The man was armed when police confronted him at noon on Sunday.
"He was fleeing the scene when police gave chase and shot and wounded him in the leg. He was arrested and taken to the hospital under police guard."
The man, who could not be named, would appear soon in the Protea Magistrate's Court on charges of murder, attempted murder, several counts of ATM bombing and of escaping from custody.
He escaped from the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto in December while on trial for a string of ATM bombings in Gauteng, Crime Line said in a statement.
Crime Line said it received a tip-off and handed the information over to the police, which led to the arrest.
The man was also wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of police reservist Busisiwe Mehlwana during an ATM bombing at a filling station in Pimville, Soweto, on July 5.
