Pietermaritzburg - Police are in the process of linking a man to a car theft racket operating in Pietermaritzburg after a successful bust on Wednesday.

The man was arrested after Flying Squad members received information about a car, hidden in an area near Cato Ridge, that was allegedly used in an armed robbery in Mountain Rise recently.

According to Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese, Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad commander Captain Zamo Bhengu received information about where the blue Ford bakkie was hidden on Wednesday evening.

When Bhengu arrived, he spotted another vehicle, a Nissan bakkie, which aroused his suspicion, and called his team for back-up.

Warrant officers Clinton Kraamwinkel and Graham Peel rushed to Bhengu’s aid and the three arrested the driver of the vehicle as the number plate and licence disc did not correspond.

Ngobese said on Thursday that police were processing the man’s details to see if he was linked to any other crimes.

Both vehicles were taken to a police pound.
