Suspected con artist released on bail
Durban - A man who allegedly defrauded a woman of about R500 000 was granted bail of R25 000 when he appeared in the Durban Regional Court, the Mercury reported on Tuesday.
Visham Panday was arrested on Sunday in Durban's La Mercy for fraud. His girlfriend was arrested with him but she was questioned in connection with the case and released without being charged on Monday, the newspaper reported.
Panday allegedly posed as a doctor in 2009 and promised a woman a lucrative job with his company in the United States. He also allegedly persuaded her to invest her life savings of about R450 000 in his business, the Mercury reported.
When the woman got no returns, she opened a case of fraud.
Magistrate Anita Govender granted Panday bail and imposed stringent conditions, including that he had to report to the Durban North police station three times a week, surrender his passport and not leave Durban.
The matter was adjourned to February 10.
