Johannesburg - The sons and wife of a Pretoria lecturer they allegedly killed several years ago were refused bail by the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, police said.

Abraham Moema's wife Martha, 54, and their sons Moseki, 23, and Kgopotso, 27, would appear in court again on 21 September, Colonel Tummi Shai said.

Moema, a retired lecturer, was reported missing in March 2010.

"A few months later, it was rumoured he might have gone to Botswana. His younger brother Papi Moema went to Botswana to search for him, but was only told that Abraham last visited the country in 1979," said Shai.

In 2011, paving contractors employed by Moema's daughter Mathlodi, 34, found a shallow grave in the family's back yard.

Police exhumed the body and found Moema had been stabbed to death.

Mathlodi was arrested for allegedly trying to destroy evidence by hiring the construction workers. She is out on R1000 bail.
