Pietermaritzburg - A man has died after a horror attack in Pietermaritzburg in which he was allegedly bitten all over his body by a group of men, one of whom later shot him.

The man died of his injuries at Edendale Hospital on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said that Sifiso Sithole, 35, was socialising at a local tavern at about 18:30 on Saturday when he was confronted by a group of men.

“The men grabbed him and forced him into the boot of a vehicle and drove away with him,” said Jeevan.

She said that when they reached a deserted road, they stopped the car and hauled Sithole out of the boot. They accused him of stealing a television set from one of the men’s houses.

Bite marks

They then bit him all over his body.

Jeevan described the bite marks as “bad”. She said the wounds from the bites were bleeding.

“It is further alleged that one of the men then produced a firearm and shot the victim once in the chest, seriously wounding him,” Jeevan said.

The men fled the scene and the injured Sithole was found by a passerby who immediately called the police.

He was taken to Edendale Hospital where he died.

An hour after Sithole was abducted from the tavern, detectives from Plessislaer followed up on information and arrested a man, 44, at Imbali Unit 18.

Jeevan said he was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The police were continuing with their investigation.
