Pretoria - Classes at the strike-hit Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria will resume on Wednesday, the institution said on Monday.

"Lectures at all the Tshwane University of Technology's (TUT) campuses based in Tshwane will resume on Wednesday," spokesperson Willa de Ruyter said.

"The university is aware of the concerns of the majority of our students about the disruption to studies caused by the protest action at our campuses in Ga-Rankuwa and Pretoria."

Student protests over a lack of funds in the National Student Financial Aid Scheme led to the closure of the institution. Last week the Student Representative Council said the strike would continue until they decided to end it.

De Ruyter said the university had taken the decision to re-open to ensure that the academic programme resumed as quickly as possible to enable students to successfully complete the academic year.

On Sunday, the SRC accused the university of "communicating wrong messages" to the community and therefore "aggravating the problems" facing students.

The SRC was not immediately reachable for comment on Monday morning.
