TV presenter's hijacked cousin found dead

2012-03-26 22:54

Cape Town - The cousin of a well-known Carte Blanche presenter was found dead, hours after being hijacked on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, according to a report.

The programme's Devi Sankaree Govender was among family members who made an impassioned plea via Facebook for the safe return of Soomesham Govender when the the 27-year-old failed to return from a night out on Sunday morning.

Her posting read: “THIS IS A VERY URGENT MESSAGE! My cousin Sumeshan Govender went missing last night while driving from Umzinto to Umkomaas.

He was driving a powder blue Polo hatchback, registration no: NX 952. The car was found by police – 2 unknown occupants were in the car.

"Sumeshan is not even 30, tall and very good looking. Please assist – we are all in a complete state. Please post a message to me if you have any information.

"We suspect he was driving on the back road to Umkomaas. Pass this on to as many people you know," according to the Daily News.

But, within five hours of his family reporting him missing, Govender’s body was found at the Scottburgh mortuary.

It is suspected that he may have jumped from the speeding vehicle, resulting in his death, as he had sustained multiple fractures to his arms and legs and severe head trauma.

Police, however, have not ruled out that he could have been pushed from the moving car.

Jumped? The chunks of garbage who did this should be charged with murder.

  • mary.kircher - 2012-03-27 02:05

it is just awful, all these senseless deaths for nothing - a young man starting his life - now nothing - I am so tired of crime - for nothing ! RIP

  • Atholl - 2012-03-27 02:10

The Umkomaas area has been a hotspot for years ... crime prevails : ... whilst fishing on the beach even in a heavily armed crowd and more so at night. ... at the fuel 'one-stop' ... whilst on the golf course - (Selborne has had a fatal attack on the course). ... stopping on the freeway to buy golf balls or crayfish. ... at caravan parks and insecure resorts. ... and now -- whilst returning after a night out ! these negative incidents hurt the circle of opportunity for the locals which in turn dries up the economy. The Govenders, friends, colleagues must be devastated at the loss of a young family member.

      Liz - 2012-03-27 16:26

Yes Atholl, and people are hi-jacked and thrown off the Umkomaas bridge regularly, It is indeed a crime hotspot. How sad is this for the poor family, friend and colleagues. I used to live up the road in Doonside.

This is a typical South African Story

      AnenaBurger - 2012-03-28 08:13

Don't you think it is extremely sad that the South African story had to come to this? Like the American dream.... all that was wonderful and good is now so very lost. I pray and wish the best for all us as South Africans... It would be lovely if we could start to write a new book.

  • Darren - 2012-03-27 07:10

Such a shame - another young, senseless and needless to say terrifiying death. Condolences to family and friends.

  • Marion - 2012-03-27 07:57

May he RIP and sincere condolences to his loved ones. There is always the possibility that he did jump thinking he had a better chance to survive if he jumped than he would have at the hands of the hijackers.

      TaniaSandraSteyn - 2012-03-27 23:01

I would have jumped too, Marion. Being dead doesn't scare me as much as rape and torture.

  • maniza.ahoua - 2012-03-27 07:58

THE DEATH PENALTY MUST COME BACK!!!!

  • rynovanderwalt - 2012-03-27 09:08

I've lived in the UK for 6 years and ive been back for 2 years. My eyes opened a bit. I've realised that 99% of people (all races) in this country thinks the same and the we are striving for the same thing. We just want to live in peace and do our own thing. Problem is that we still can't except each other. Its time to stand together against a pathetic government. Its time to stand together and stop crime. Bring back the death penalty! We need better law inforcement! We need to do something..together.

  • tania.swanepoel - 2012-03-27 09:40

  • mlucejko - 2012-03-27 10:43

Bring back the 'Death Penalty' !! It's the only way to rid society of these murderers !!

  • Jayson - 2012-03-27 10:59

Ha ha. What do you say about that "mr anonymous". Your buddies are now sitting in jail. Well, well, well what did I say about the wheel. Good on you Metro.

  • Cynthia - 2012-03-27 11:36

Don't send them to prison. They have a wonderful life there, 3 x meals a day, a bed to sleep in, TV etc. When they have been convicted because the relevant documents never got lost this time, lock them in the room with the families of the victim/s and let them deal out their own justice to these scumbags. I cannot even imagine what his family are doing through today but know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I am very, very fond of the Indian nation because they are truly a peace loving people. Rest in peace, justice might be served here.

  • ailsa.j.loudon - 2012-03-27 12:56

      Jayson - 2012-03-27 16:35

Those rotten thugs were arrested. 3 of them.

  • acsteyn - 2012-03-27 14:44

Sincere dondolances to you and your family Devi.

  • Cynthia - 2012-03-27 16:01

Jacob Zuma said he would bring back the death penalty!!! LOL. It was just said so that the whites would vote for him. The ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH MURDURERS IS TO BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALY. All the promises these politicians make really would make good reading in a joke book.

      hpodbielski - 2012-05-10 19:19

I hope the next election the population wake up and don't get conned again - some just never learn!

  • charmaine.drummond - 2012-03-27 16:30

  • Ashliegh - 2012-03-27 16:38

condolences to the family shame this is tragety hey may the soul rest in peace touched hey*crying*

  • George - 2012-03-28 02:38

Can I prevail on the Carte Blanche team to seriously and I mean seriously look at the return of the death penalty, just to stabilize this stampede of wanton mayhem. I had an incident in 1998 and I barely survived. Daily hundreds of our citizens are tortured, maimed, raped and killed. How much is enough. I feel compassion for Mazerakis working his butt off to raise paltry millions to save the health system when billions are made to evaporate, donated wards are sabotaged, etc. We need to look at the experience of other unstable multicultural societies like the US and see how effective the death penalty can be to deter the animals in society. There seems no alternative. I know it will be opposed

  • Carry - 2012-03-28 07:31

CRIMINALS IN THIS COUNTRY HAVE RIGHTS - ALL THE RIGHTS. IT'S ABOUT TIME THESE RIGHTS ARE REVOKED AND THEY GET THEIR JUST REWARDS. NOBODY LIKES THE DEATH PENALTY - BUT SOMETIMES I THINK THAT THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO HELP SORT S.A. OUT WITH OUR CRIME STATISTICS.

  • AnenaBurger - 2012-03-28 08:06

My sincere condolences to ms. Govender and her family. This is so very tragic.

  • hpodbielski - 2012-05-10 19:14

What absolute heartless criminals in this country. Bring back the death penalty otherwise we will have people taking things into their own hands. Can't blame them.

  • Fana - 2012-05-12 09:33

    Sad story indeed

  • Victoria - 2012-05-16 13:04
