TVs stolen after accident - cops arrested

2012-01-11 23:03

Bloemfontein - Seven police officers and four civilians have been arrested for stealing 20 plasma television sets at an accident scene, Free State police said on Wednesday.

The truck driver lost control of the truck and it overturned between Smithfield and Rouxville in December, said Sergeant Fikiswa Matoti.

"He sustained some injuries and he was taken to hospital, leaving behind the truck with the load."

Matoti said the owner of the truck found stock missing when he arrived at the scene to have the truck towed and he reported this to the police.

The scene was attended by police and emergency services workers.

The arrests were made on Tuesday, and 20 plasma television sets were recovered.

Matoti said the 11 would appear in the Rouxville Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

      Banana republic!!!!

      Sizwe - 2012-01-12 10:41

The fact that Police Officers committed such a crime is despicable in itself, however the fact that they were arrested for the said crime is an indication that the system still works, regardless how pessimistic we may be towards it.

      Isn't it a perk?

  • TheWatcher - 2012-01-11 23:41

Seriously? How stupid do you get... did they think that nobody would check the records to see who was called out to the accident site?

      benson.s.zulu - 2012-01-12 01:52

I believe it was not their first time...but at least finally they've been caught

  • Sean - 2012-01-12 00:43

And as usual these policemen, tainting the whole force, will be suspended with full pay after which the whole case will be swept under that over-filled carpet with so many other cases! What a blady shame!

      benson.s.zulu - 2012-01-12 01:55

That's very true Sean...! How did you manage to predict the future.

      Wesley - 2012-01-12 05:45

They shouldn't be charged with theft, but for stupidity

  • Sean - 2012-01-12 00:56

Not flat screens, flat brains! How on earth did they think that they would get away with it idiots. Theft is a serious offence especially for policemen who are supposed to be trusted to curb such wrong-doings in the first place! I don't trust anyone anymore thanks to tainted policemen like these. Straight to jail, no bail, no appeal after been convicted for theft and allow their arses to take the brunt there! I'd these policemen study law at college or how to steal? judge please make examples of these corrupt policemen, they are not worthy of their current jobs at all. Scrubbing toilets in jail is where they belong! May this be a warning to all rogue policemen out there you can run, but you can't hide, remember what you were taught at college!?

  • Bennie - 2012-01-12 07:42

Police also stole all my dads stuff when he died in a car accident. Ring, suit jacket, wallet, you name it, anything that was not full of blood was taken. Cannot stand the pigs......

      Peter - 2012-01-12 10:04

For what it is worth, I am sorry this happened to you.

  • coert.welman - 2012-01-12 08:41

We have the most effective police force in the world. In about 85% of the cases they are already on the scene when the crime happens.

  • Ludwig - 2012-01-12 08:46

"Seven police officers" must be the hole of Smithfield and/or Rouxville's police stations. I don't believe there is only a couple of rotten apples in the SAPS!

  • mastermindpete - 2012-01-12 09:23

  • bretton.eveleigh - 2012-01-12 10:33

Gee... ever wondered why it's so difficult to get justice in SA, cause the cops themselves are totally corrupt! I've heard many similar stories of cops stealing when attending to a robbery scene!

  • ludlowdj - 2012-01-12 10:48

Welcome to the New South Africa, thing will not be getting better.

  • anthony.swart - 2012-01-12 10:56

Can't trust the police, O my SA epic FAIL!

  • Caroline - 2012-01-12 11:30

FRANS No dicipline,no conscience,no knowledge in the police department since 1994 because the people with knowledge were pushed out and unqualified people who after 18 years are still unqualified took over the reins. What else can you expect, the most wonderful recipe for chaos.

  • Fanie - 2012-01-12 11:52

Are these the same police that has firearm confiscating rights and warrantless search rights ?

  • Gail - 2012-01-12 12:34

The report I heard was that the police had recovered and arrested 7 people for the theft of the televisions. It did not say they were police men who actually stole them. There is a subtly difference but a difference nonetheless given the level of reporting on this site. Let's not condemn the police unless we are sure that they actually were involved in the theft. Even if they were the TV's have been recovered by other police who did a good job. Kudo's to the good cops who serve.

      Nick - 2012-01-12 13:07

Er .... the report says ....."Seven police officers and four civilians have been arrested for stealing 20 plasma television sets at an accident scene," .... Just wanted to bring you up to date !
