Table Mountain attacks halved

2012-10-02 11:28
Cape Town - Attacks on the Table Mountain chain and related areas have dropped by at least half compared to the same time last year, the Cape Times reported on Tuesday.

On Table Mountain itself, there had been "virtually" no crimes in a year.

The figures were provided by the Table Mountain Safety Action Group. SA National Parks (SANParks) told the newspaper that crimes had dropped by two-thirds. It declined to give exact figures.

The mountain safety group was formed after numerous attacks were recorded for Lion's Head, Rhodes Memorial, Signal Hill, Sandy Bay, Newlands Forest, and Noordhoek Beach.

The group's Andre van Schalkwyk said he was thinking of disbanding the group because it had achieved its objective. He attributed the decrease in crime to an increased presence of rangers on the mountains.

SANParks spokesperson Wanika Rusthoi told the newspaper that throughout winter a safety team had cleared out hideaways and taken the fingerprints of loiterers.

She said 60 permanently employed visitor safety rangers patrolled the mountain chain 24 hours a day.
