Table Mountain jumper identified

2011-01-11 12:37

Cape Town - The man found dead on Table Mountain has been identified as property developer Rob Taylor, Cape Town police said on Tuesday.

“The body was identified by a family member late last night [Monday]. The family member made contact with the detective and identified the body as Rob Taylor,” said Captain Ezra October.

On Sunday at around 20:15 police received a call from search and rescue workers saying there was a body below the Table Mountain cable car. An inquest docket was opened.

On Monday October could not confirm whether Taylor committed suicide. “No note was found. All he had on him was a credit card. That is all we are working on."

Beeld newspaper reported on Tuesday that a man believed to be Taylor ascended Table Mountain in the cable car late on Sunday afternoon. Once at the top he took off his backpack and, arms outstretched, jumped.

Taylor, a well known Howick property developer, pilot and skydiving enthusiast, made headlines in January 2010 when he gave eight car guards at the cable station a brand new Audi worth over R2m and R20 000 in cash.

What the hell is going on in this world? If a rich man like Taylor committed suicide, it means life has no meaning at all. I always believed that as he was one of the richest men that I have known, he had everything which could buy himslef happiness.

uuuuhhhm evidently money doesnt buy you happiness!!! aint nothing wrong with the world, more like what the hell is going on with people???

      gilliansan - 2011-01-11 13:10

Which just goes to prove that money can't buy you happiness. Sad story indeed :(

      gnyatlo - 2011-01-11 13:13

Indeed Matseko, life is not all about material trappings and opulence. The soul often needs more - and this 'more' is seldom offered by our times. The 'car gift' took almost everybody by surprise when it happened - was it a tell-tale sign of things to come? What goes on in the mind of a suicider just before the deed? Very few have there and told the full story.

it just shows you that money can't buy happiness or peace. it can make life very easy and comfortable but all you need is love...

it can sure by a lot of therapy though. I stopped judging a suicidal person after someone close to me tried and failed, he just couldnt take it anymore. I learned what i see as bearable to me may be unbearable to someone else. May he find peace wherever he goes.

  • SEMATSATSA - 2011-01-11 13:17

Haunted money Matseko, what else can push one that far? some of it have been squeezed out of crying empty, poor pockets.Who will be given that Diablo? man!!!!

      otiose - 2011-01-11 13:53

You knew nothing about him, yet you can judge him like this? You are a fool

      PJP - 2011-01-11 15:27

You actually have no idea what you talking about so rather stay off the site.

      chingchongsa - 2011-01-11 15:30

ENOUGH already!!! NO one wants to hear your opinions.

      ebdg3000 - 2011-01-12 06:45

SEMATSATSA, I've been thinking the same thing - why was he so troubled? What dark secret lies in his past that eventually drove him over the edge, so to speak?

  • slowysa - 2011-01-11 13:36

Maybe he was under the impression that he only took off his back pack, but instead he also took off his skydiving chute as well...thought he was going to fly through the air. Rest in peace Rob.

      Wagga - 2011-01-11 13:46

No, he thought he was an Angel and can fly,

I will say its a second of madness. Many a times I have stood on tall buildings, I always have a that second of madness of wanting to jump and see what will happen, its come to me several times, I have also at many occassions had the urge to cross a red robot. Voices in my heard tell me to but I fight them and I know its only a matter of time before I join you Rob......I am hearing voices in my head telling me to also visit cable mountain

  • gigasands - 2011-01-11 13:47

They say money can't buy you happiness BUT I'd rather sit crying in my Lamborghini, than on a bicycle...

  • wes.hinstridge - 2011-01-11 13:58

this is very sad as this is one person who had a heart of gold. your legacy will live long amongst the people you knew and unfortunately we all go through times in life not money related and some pull through and some dont. if this is how you felt you needed to go then its your decision Rob, as i said your generosity will live long in peoples hearts. rest in peace
