Cape Town - The City of Cape Town will consider helping pay for the installation of closed circuit TV cameras on Table Mountain.
Mayoral committee member Marian Nieuwoudt on Thursday said the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) had asked for an additional R1.34m per annum over the next four years for CCTV cameras to improve visitor safety on the mountain.
"The City has reaffirmed its commitment to the partnership between the various parties and will consider the provision of additional funds to the TMNP," she said.
"If approved, it will be done on a project basis which will allow the City to monitor the spending."
Nieuwoudt said not only would future funding be project-based but the City would honour its commitment to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for residents, and local and foreign visitors to City parks.
"The partnership with the TMNP is of critical importance as the City recognises the park as a valuable economic asset. Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of residents and visitors to the park and other nature reserves," she said.
"Such expenditure will be part of a greater security plan for all nature reserves in the metropole."
The establishment of a Table Mountain Neighbourhood Watch should also be considered, she said.
